about the SPARC Program:
1. What does SPARC
stand for?
Support Program for Abuse Reactive Children |

2. What
are the ages of the children on the program?
6-16yrs |
3. What
is the vision of this program?
To disrupt the cycle of abuse and prevent the
development of potential adult offenders. |
4. How
are the children elected to go on the program?
It is usually court mandated, but there are exceptions
where voluntary clients are allowed on this programme. |
5. When
was the program started?
In February 2001. |
6. Who
currently runs the SPARC program (s)?
The Therapeutic manager at the Teddy Bear Clinic. |
7. How
many trained, active therapists are there who run
SPARC programs?
4 who are actively running programs at the Teddy Bear
Clinic but 66 individuals have been trained in Gauteng. |
8. How
many children are in each session?
From 5 to 10 children. |
9. How
long does a program go on for?
We contract for 12 sessions but some children may need
to remain in the program longer, depending on their
progress. |
10. How
many children have been through the program?
42 children at Soweto. 72 children at Johannesburg. |
11. What
happens to the children once the program is
over?
They are referred into a community service program for
6 months (SPCA, library or working with the aged.) |
12. How
is the success rate monitored?
We have conducted 3 month, 6 month and 18 month
follow-ups to evaluate the offender free status of
each child. |
13. How
long will it take to train a therapist?
Firstly the person needs to have worked in the field
and have had experience. The course is 5 days. |
14. How
many SPARC programs could run at once in
Jo/burg/Soweto if there were enough therapists?
4 in Johannesburg and 4 in Soweto. |

program cost?

16. Are
programs run like this elsewhere in the
country/world?
No- not for pre-pubescent children in this country and
there is very little information available. |
17. Does
the Government donate funds towards this
program?
If not, would they ever and how could the program
qualify?
They have promised, but nothing has been forwarded to
date. |
